ATHLETICS: Ugandan athletes eye IAAF's Ush1.4billion

No athlete will want to miss it and a strong team of 35 Ugandan runners are gearing for the National Cross Country Championships in Kampala in January to give themselves the ticket for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2017 here.

Indeed, Uganda Athletics Federation is using the championship to select a team that will represent Uganda at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships Kampala 2017.

Top runners who include Timothy Toroitich, Joshua Cheptegei, Jacob Araptany, Philip Kiplimo among others are at the high altitude camp in Bukwo under watchful eyes of national head coach Benjamin Longiros.

The athletes are fighting to excel at the National Championship on January 14 at Kololo Independence Ground and book a slot in the World event at the same ground in March.

Over 80 countries and 700 athletes are expected to grace the World Cross Country Championships on March 26, 2017 at Kololo Independence Ground.

There is an equivalent of Ush1400,000,000 cash package in place for winners in the relays and the senior men and senior women individual and team categories to share.

The Local Organising Committee hopes to use the National Cross Country Championships as a mock event for the IAAF Championship.

As such the committee will on Wednesday December 28, 2016 take interested media personnel through update inspection of the course.

IAAF had recommended remodeling and modernization of the course to suit the international standards.
