ATHLETICS: Cheptegei to lead Police runners team

The Uganda Police athletics team that will be out to defend their national cross-country championships title will be led by runner Joshua Cheptegei.

Cheptegei is the reigning Africa cross-country junior and IAAF world junior champion.

The national cross-country championship is in preparations to strengthen the athletes for the Kampala IAAF World Cross Country Championship in March 23, 2017 at Kololo Ceremonial grounds.

Cheptegei will lead the other runners who include Mande Abdallah, Moses Kurong, Jacob Araptany, Alex Cherop and Nathan Ayeko in the seniors’ category for Police.

Their junior men’s category will have Elisha Chemutai, Abel Chebet, and Martin Musau.

Stella Chesang, Mercyline Chelangat, Patricia Chekwemoi and Prim Twikirize are in the senior women category.

More Ugandan athletes from other clubs are yet expected to register for the national cross country if they should have chances to secure slots for the global event in Kampala.

Registration deadline for all clubs for the national cross-country championship is Monday January 9, 2017 at 12:00.

In November 19, 2014, Team Uganda beat Bahrain to the hosting right of the biennial event is expected to attract over 700 athletes and 200 journalists across the world.


The last time an IAAF World Cross Country Championship event came to Africa was in Mombasa, Kenya in 2007.
